The Cheektowaga community opened a new youth media center named in honor of Detective Wasyl Potienko, who died in a car accident while on duty in October 2002.  On Wednesday, his wife Mary cut the ribbon on the Detective Wasyl Potienko Media Center at the Alexander Community Center in Cheektowaga.  It features computers and books to help tutor children from second through tenth grade, primarily through after-school programs. “It’s an incredible feeling that we’re helping others,” Mary Potienko said.  “In our loss, we’re trying to help and guide young people, keep his memory alive, along with all the other police officers who have lost their lives in an untimely death.” “We’re honoring everyone including my husband.”
